Canada provides high quality education along with attractive options for students, like; obtaining Canadian work experience after graduation and the ability to transition to permanent residence. Canada retains the Canadian-educated foreign students and absorbs them into the Canadian workforce.

International students are a prescribed class of persons who may obtain temporary residential status and who have been issued study permits as the member of the student class.

Under this program, a study permit is issued when a foreign national has been accepted to undertake a program of study that is for more than 6 months in duration at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.

Work during and after your study in Canada (On Campus & Off Campus)

On Campus: An International student in Canada on a valid work permit is authorized to work on campus without a work permit, provided that the student is enrolled full-time at a post-secondary DLI and maintains full time status at the institution.

Off Campus: An International student must have a valid study permit to be authorized to work off campus without a work permit, provided that the student is enrolled full time at a post-secondary DLI and maintains full time status at the institution. An International student may work off campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week during their regular academic sessions and may work fulltime during their schedule breaks (winter/summer holidays, reading week).

In addition, your spouse or common-law partner will also be eligible to work on an open work permit while you study and after graduation.

Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Foreign Nationals currently in possession of a valid study permit and who are about to graduate from a post-secondary institution may apply for a postgraduate open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). This also means you are one step closer to transitioning to permanent resident status.
